Chocolate Chip Cookies
I started making these cookies many years ago and have been giving them out for almost thirty years to the kids who come trick-or-treating on Halloween. My kids have grown up with them and seem to have come to no harm in doing so.
The secret is whole wheat flour and only brown sugar. Otherwise it’s the Toll House Cookie recipe on Nestle's chocolate chips package.
Be sure to have plenty of milk on hand!
Preheat oven to 350 F.
Mix 1/2 lb. butter (2 sticks) with
1-1/2 cup dark brown sugar. Add
2 eggs and
1 tsp. vanilla. Beat together.
In a separate bowl combine 2-1/4 cups whole wheat flour (or mostly whole wheat with a little white)
1 teaspoon baking soda and
1 teaspoon salt.
Add flour mixture to butter/sugar/egg mixture.
When the dough is well-mixed, add and mix in:
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips and
1 cup chopped walnuts.
Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto cookie sheet and bake for about 10 minutes. Let cool on baking sheet a few minutes, then use spatula to lift them off and onto a flat surface.
That's your basic recipe. You can substitute uncooked oatmeal and raisins for oatmeal-raisin cookies, pecans for the walnuts, and so on. The basic dough is a great beginning for most kinds of cookies. When I figure out how to adapt it to peanut butter cookies, I'll let you know.
